Note the
endings (s, es) after the masculine and neuter
articles. This indicates that the masculine or neuter noun itself receives an
ending in the genitive case.
Genitive with Names of People. If the name of a person is the
possessor, genitive is expressed with an -s, without an apostrophe.
Wagners Musik
Karins Wohnung
Mariannes Studenten
An apostrophe, without the -s, is used if the name ends in
an -s sound.
Fritz' Auto
Hans' Buch
Dative as a substitute
for genitive. In
spoken German, the genitive case is
frequently replaced by the preposition von
plus the dative case.
Das Heft der Studentin. Das Heft von der Studentin.
Die Tochter des Mannes. Die
Tochter von dem Mann.
Der Name des Berges.
Der
Name von dem Berg.
Helgas Freund. Der Freund von
Helga.
GENITIVE TO DENOTE INDEFINITE TIME
The genitive
case is used to indicate indefinite time.
eines Tages one
day; someday
eines Morgens one
morning; some morning
eines Abends one
evening; some evening
When used
as an expression of indefinite time, the feminine noun die Nacht
behaves like the masculine nouns above and takes masculine endings: eines Nachts.
